Travelers hope to have an authentic, educational, and hands-on experience within the unique tule ecosystem of Lake Atitlán. They seek to learn firsthand how this aquatic plant sustains the lake’s biodiversity and supports the economy of communities that, for generations, have preserved ancestral techniques of harvesting, fishing, and crafting.
The expectation is to come into direct contact with nature and local wisdom — paddling through the tules by kayak or traditional canoe, birdwatching, taking part in artisanal fishing, and visiting the homes of tule harvesters to see how they transform this resource into useful and beautiful products.
From the Porta Hotel del Lago , we will walk to the public beach pier to board a boat to Santiago Atitlán.
From the pier we will walk to the beach, where we will be greeted by community guides.
We’ll sail through the tulle fields. During the tour, we’ll learn about this aquatic plant and its ecological and cultural importance.
We will have the opportunity to participate in a traditional fishing demonstration with the tuleros, using ancestral methods that respect the ecosystem.
We will learn about the tulle harvesting process, how it is dried and prepared for the production of artisanal products.
We will see how tulle is transformed into mats, backpacks and handcrafted figures, listening to the stories of those who have inherited this art.
