Tour Details

Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikeles. It was founded around 1463 in a flat and relatively elevated area, following the Mayan construction custom. The original settlers, the Cakchiqueles, presented rivalry with the Quichés, and the place is constituted as the last capital of the Kaqchikel Mayas. Then in 1524, Iximché would become the first capital of the Spanish conquerors in Guatemala. Due to the hostility of the indigenous people, this city founded by Pedro de Alvarado was transferred to the Almolonga valley as “Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala”.
